Single lane closures will slow traffic on both Kingsbury and Geiger grades beginning May 2.
Nevada Department of Transportation officials said the work will replace roadside drainage berms and guardrails. Lane closures will only happen from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The work begins Monday, May 2 and will last into mid-June.
Officials expect the delays for drivers will be minimal with pilot cars and flaggers directing traffic alternating directions on the roadways.
The most extensive work will be on Geiger Grade from the base to northwest of Virginia City.
The spokesman said bicyclists are advised to seek alternate routes.
NDOT has already installed more than 1,500 linear feet of new storm drain pipe and reinforced additional roadway drain pipe and drainage inlets on Kingsbury Grade.
