Mike Thomas lecture series to return to JCDO
Mike Thomas is resuming his lecture series at the Jack C. Davis Observatory.
Thomas is planning presentations on “The Mountain Men” on Friday, May 20 and “Aliens in the Movies” on Saturday, May 21. The free lectures begin at 7:30 p.m.
For openers, Thomas will tell the story of explorers, trappers and guides who roamed the West from 1810 through the 1880s, followed by how aliens have been portrayed in movies, including “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Alien,” “Star Wars,” and more.
Thomas presents science and history lectures in Northern Nevada. He and his wife, Eleanor, travel extensively, giving him the opportunity to research his topics and bring insightful richness to his history and science presentations.
On Saturday nights when lectures aren’t scheduled, the observatory is open to the public from dusk to 11 p.m. Better known as Star Parties, these gatherings enable the Western Nevada Astronomical Society to convene people with an interest in astronomy. The lectures and Star Parties are free and open to the public.
The observatory is located at 2699 Vanpatten Drive in Carson City.
