Elisa Cafferata has announced her resignation as director of the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

She is the second major department head to resign as Gov.-elect Joe Lombardo prepares to become governor. The first was director of the Department of Administration Laura Freed who announced in an email to her division heads that Lombardo had decided to appoint a new director.

Cafferata eliminated a major backlog of unemployment insurance claims and, over the past two years, paid out over $12 billion in benefits.

The department also shepherded more than $72 million in federal money to modernize the division’s computer system.

Her resignation is effective Jan. 2, the day before Lombardo takes office.
