Grand Chinese Dinner: Sam Wau, a Chinese person, had a grand dinner for his friends at the house occupied by Arnold Friend who has a photographic gallery. Everything seemed to be according to the highest order of the culinary art. Among the invited guests were H. M. Yerington, Superintendent of the V. & T. R. R.; Judge Lewis, of the Supreme Court…. During the repast, the invited were treated to a fusillade of Chinese crackers, the method the Chinese have of honoring their guests. Wine was quaffed to the assembled guests or to their Celestial friends, we are unable to say.

Hank Monk: Tourists traveling on Hank’s stage from Carson to the lake was incessantly plied with questions about subjects familiar to him. Hank, equal to the emergency in his drawling style, answered all the lady’s interrogations. She noted down everything told to her. She confidentially stated that she would write a book when she returned home. Hank received a letter from the lady, dated Greenwood, Mississippi advising him that the book entitled, “Tahoe or Life in California” is finished. She has asked him to act as agent in this city. She states that all the information that she received from Hank is in her work. Monk accepted. Yet, he has received no subscribers.

All sorts: Archie Hancock, fourteen years old, died in Virginia City. His death was brought about by an overindulgence in nuts.

Avoided quarantine: A woman boarded the west bound passenger train. She was heavily veiled. But you could see her face was broken out with smallpox or pimples. She contracted the smallpox disease in Reno. Her previous place of lodging has been thoroughly fumigated.

Shower for Darlene Ireland: A baby shower was held at the home of Jack Smoot for Darlene Ireland. Assisting with arrangements, was Mrs. Dolores Lane. Games were played and refreshments served. Invited were, Mesdames Wilma McKenzie, Esther Lane, Lucille Birney, Ethel Nichols, Irma Johnson, Edith Van Ness, Bernice Rhodes, Mary Morris, Nellie Laird, Edith Fritsch, Helen Pispisa…

Photo caption: Jeff Ackerman, former publisher of the Nevada Appeal, receives an award from John Tatro, a board member of the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada. Ackerman received two awards. The marketing award for helping the club raise nearly $100,000 and a special award for his service to the club.

Spring coming: A man with a large load of Cottonwood trees passed through town on his way to the Orphan’s Home. We understand that Theodore A. Hale, father-in-law to the institution, contemplates the purchase and setting out of a large quantity of shade trees. The Home, already the best institution in the State, will be much improved by the addition of a thousand trees.

New York Bakery: Peter Cavanaugh will settle permanently in Carson. We visited his bakery and found a large number of crackers ready for shipment. He has made arrangements with the Virginia and Gold Hill merchants to supply them with crackers at San Francisco prices. Newly baked crackers should be worth more than the tough, stale ones, from the Bay.

Edison lamps: Edison will soon be making them in New York at the rate of a thousand a day. His object is to light the interior of buildings. He is also experimenting at Menlo Park with an electric railway three miles long — progress is favorable.
