The Pacific Southwest Regional Baseball Tournament returns to the Oasis of Nevada for the second-straight year.
After hosting the Babe Ruth 13-under tournament last summer, the Cal Ripken 12-under tournament comes to Fallon next week when a dozen teams from Utah, Arizona, California, Nevada and Hawaii will compete for a berth to the World Series in Maryland next month.
The tournament starts on Monday after teams arrive Sunday for several festivities, including pin trading, home run derby and a skills contest. Opening ceremonies are Monday at 9 a.m. at Oats Park followed by the first round of games at 11 a.m. The first four days will be pool play until the top two teams in each pool advance to a single-elimination bracket on Friday. The championship is on Saturday.
All games are at Oats Park. Admission is free.
The tournament will have a double dose of local flavor, too.
Fallon’s 12-under Green team won the state tournament last month while Spanish Springs will serve as the state representative. Fallon’s other 12-under team (White) will also get to compete.
Three pools make up the round-robin format. Pool A consists of Fallon Green, West Kauai (Hawaii No. 2), Lone Peak (Northern Utah No. 1) and Los Altos (Southern California). Pool B includes Kai Elite (Hawaii No. 1), Brighton (Northern Utah No. 2), Central (Central California No. 2) and Spanish Springs. Pool C includes Somerton Mets (Arizona), Fallon White, Northern California and Tulare (Central California No. 1).
The community will get their first chance at watching Fallon White play on Monday when it takes on Arizona at 4 p.m. Fallon Green will host West Kauai on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Spanish Springs will open the tournament against Central at 11 a.m.
Fallon’s 9-under and 10-under all-star teams will be competing at the regional tournament in California next week.
