Sierra Lutheran High School’s return to normalcy this year with its focus on student activities, athletics, the arts and community service keeps the high school experience engaging, according to Executive Director Brian Underwood.

The school is hosting an open house from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday for families interested in exploring the private school’s academic, athletic and career planning offerings for students. It will also provide a chance for families to receive an update on the school’s expansion plans, previously announced last year, Underwood told the Appeal last week.

Sierra Lutheran began its fall calendar year in August with a record 138 enrollment and continues to see growth ahead.
“We expect this to play into the campus master plan study we did a few months ago,” he said.

The Phase 2a plans announced last year and expected to begin this fall, a 13,000-square-foot building that will house improved classrooms, a science lab, multi-use space, would enlarge the campus to allow for 200 students.

Underwood said the next subphase of the project is 2b, the cafetorium that will trail the north building within the next year or two.

As the school holds its annual benefit dinner Gifts of Grace Saturday, Underwood said there will be a segment of the evening to encourage support for furniture and fixtures for the new buildings.

“We have a committee that works on planning (this event) for the better part of the year,” Underwood said. “Students are an essential part, and they speak and sing and perform, and it’s very student-centered. It’s important for people to come to an evening like this for the purpose of our ministry and see why we do what we do.”

The hiring season also has begun for Sierra Lutheran, with Underwood saying the school is looking to bring on additional staff while assessing its course loads for current teachers to help students who might be interested in academic classes such as biological science. Teachers also are working toward obtaining certain certifications or dual master’s degrees.
“All these things, we’ve been visiting or will be sharing at our open house on March 8,” he said.
