Bighorn News: Senior Spotlight: Madison Davis

After attending Oasis for over seven years now, senior Madison Davis feels prepared to reach for her goals as her graduation approaches.

“Oasis has the most supportive system I could have dreamed of. They helped me form my goals and turn my passions into a solid career plan,” said Davis.

Davis’ favorite memory from her time at Oasis is the lemonade stand project in Mr. Lewis' class. But along with that, she also has many people she’d like to thank for their help and guidance. “I have so many teachers I would like to thank. In fact, all my teachers at Oasis helped me grow into the human I am today, and for that I am so grateful. However, there are a few I would like to highlight.”

“First and foremost is Mr. Andy Lenon, thank you for putting up with me and rolling with my consistent breakdowns and complete 180’s when it came to my education and career goals.”

“Mr. Jake Lewis, you will always be my favorite teacher and thank you for forcing me to love math. Mrs. Jenna Maclhannon thank you for teaching me how to read despite having dyslexia.”

“Ms. Jackie Bogdanowicz, you're the best. Thank you for teaching me that I can't live without cows! Mr. William Martin, you may not teach at Oasis anymore but thank you for making history tolerable. Mr. Eric Grimes, I will forever love our country's Constitution thanks to you.”

“Finally Ms. Rochelle Tisdale, thank you for chewing me out when I needed it and not taking my crap. And to Oasis thank you for years I wouldn't trade for the world. OK so that was a lot but not all of my teachers.”

She has advice for this year’s eighth graders starting high school next year, “To the future High Schoolers who will take on the extreme task of college while in high school, stop stressing it's still high school, enjoy it and remember that you are not defined by your grades, but keep them up because it makes life way easier. Also listen to you counselors, they know what they are doing. And now I say a heartfelt farewell to school, it went by too fast but can't end soon enough.”

Davis will graduate in May with both her high school diploma and Associate of Arts degree from Western Nevada College.

Senior Spotlight: James Cosman

Having a strong college experience in high school is setting senior James Cosman up for success. His collaboration with professors at Western Nevada College through the Jump Start program during his time at Oasis Academy College Prep has increased his confidence and given him a one-of-a-kind experience as prepares to attend Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas this fall.

“My favorite memory from Oasis is working with the team at WNC, as I feel that it truly helped prepare me to move on to Southwestern University,” said Cosman. “I’d also like to thank Oasis Counselor Andy Lenon and Advisor Cheryl Venturacci for all their help.”

The science focused student will double major in Biochemistry and Biomolecular Engineering. “I intend on working to help solid-cell transplant patients avoid rejection.”

“My favorite classes are Cellular and Molecular Biology with Dr. Evett and American Sign Language (I-IV) with Ms. Craig. I feel like they both pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me a very different way of seeing things. Also, Ms. Jones as she always had great jokes on her door! Thank you!”

“Work with your professors, they are people too, and are there to help you. Go in during their office hours and meet with them face-to-face is the best advice I can give!” continued Cosman.

During his tenure at Oasis Cosman has been active in the community, working with Mayor Tedford to proclaim March as Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month and working with local companies to hold a community outreach event for the cause.

Along with studying science, Cosman will be attending Southwestern University on a swimming scholarship. Cosman recently attended the Far Western meet (athletes from the western part of the United States). Placing 13th in the 200 breaststroke, 21 in the 200 freestyle, and 6th in the 1650 freestyle (the mile).

Florida Trip Planned for 7-12 Grade Students

Seventh through twelfth grade students will learn about the agriculture and ecology of Florida in a one-of-a-kind trip scheduled for January 2023.

Students will tour local farms, the Kennedy Space Center, Ocala Horse Farm, Epcot at Walt Disney World and more to discover firsthand how the agriculture industry works in one of the country’s wettest states.

Baby Chicks Hatched in Second Grade Class

Students in Mrs. Heather Wiessmer’s second grade class got to experience the miracle of chicken hatching. The eggs were placed in an incubator for 21 days and hatched on their due date.

“This is the second year of hatching chicks in the classroom. We learn about the lifecycle of chickens and this helps promote agriculture awareness in the classroom. The concept is brought into all subjects including math, writing, and projects,” said Wiessmer. “Beyond the lifecycle, it teaches students to be aware of caring and providing for animals and livestock. The kids absolutely love it!”
