Prep roundup: Wave qualifies 5 to state swim meet; Oasis LAX wins final game

The Fallon boys qualified one individual and one relay team for this weekend’s 3A state championships after competing in last weekend’s regional meet at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Senior James Cosman qualified in two events while the 200 free relay team advanced in one as the top-four finishers advanced to compete at UNLV’s Pavilion Center Pool on Saturday.

Cosman easily captured second in the 500 free, solidifying his position by 43 seconds as he finished the race in 5 minutes, 3 seconds. Incline’s Andrew Bilotti won the race in 4:55.51. Teammate and junior Gerik Wassmuth finished eighth in 7:09.75.

Cosman finished fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.95, about 5 seconds ahead of fifth. The top time was Sage Ridge’s Alexander Power at 1:55.20.

The relay team of Zach Koenig, Macray O'Neill, Jose Ruiz and Cosman finished fourth in the 200 free in 1:43.81, almost 3 seconds ahead of the fifth-place finisher. Wassmuth is the team’s alternate going to state.

Koenig almost qualified in the 100 backstroke when he finished about a second shy of fourth. He swam the race in 1:04.78 to take fifth as Truckee’s Ryan Williams won it in 50.35.

He also finished 2 seconds shy of qualifying when he took fifth in the 200 free with a time of 2:05.09. North Tahoe’s Toby Gajar edged the Fallon sophomore with a time of 2:03.04. Sage Ridge’s Zach Power won the race in 1:46.53.

The Lady Wave swimmers weren’t as fortunate.

Fallon junior Evelyn O’Neill was less than 4 seconds from qualifying in the 200 free when she finished fifth in 2:21.43. She also took seventh in the 100 fly in 1:16.86, needing to trim 7 seconds to qualify for state.
Sophomore Gracie Potts finished eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:13.49. The last qualifying time was 1:08.95.

Fallon finished seventh in the 200 medley relay in 2:21.01 with the last qualifying time coming in at 2:11.75. The 200 free relay team finished fifth in 2:04.29 while South Tahoe took the fourth spot in 1:52.19. The 400 free relay team finished fifth in 5:02.40 while Incline was fourth in 4:21.36.

The 200 medley team included Gracie Potts, Evelyn Lott, Jo Jo Miller and O’Neill, while the 200 free team included the same set except Katelen Helton swam instead of Miller. The 400 free team included Darian Brough, Claudia Garcia Barbudo, Becca Smith and Helton.

Oasis Academy softball eliminated
The Oasis Academy softball team lost both games on Friday in heartbreaking fashion in the 1A Northern regional in Wells.
The Bighorns were up 4-1 in the first game against Coleville before the Wolves tied the game in the final inning and won 8-4 in extras. Smith Valley ended Oasis Academy's season in the next game, 5-4.
The host, Wells, won the tournament over Coleville.

Lady Bighorns win on Senior Night
The Oasis Academy girls lacrosse team defeated Spanish Springs, 11-10, in overtime last week on Senior Night to finish the season.
The Bighorns began the season rough, not getting their first win until the second half. They defeated Reno, Truckee and Damonte Ranch before taking down the Cougars, who qualified for the playoffs.
