It was a bit of an up and down performance Thursday, but the Douglas High volleyball team found a way to pull out a win over Reed. The Tigers managed to squeak out a win in the fifth set by a final of 25-14, 20-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-10. Addy Doerr led the way for the Tigers’ attack with 14 kills while Shasta Garr and Suzy Berger each posted eight kills of their own. Setters Sophia Vido and Megan Kelly had bright spots, tallying 12 and 10 assists, respectively. Vido added four aces to her resume as well. “We have young setters, who have never set varsity,” said Douglas head coach Suzi Townsell. “Sometimes there is going to be some work. They were doing great, but I think it’s just reps, reps, reps.” In the two sets the Tigers dropped, the offense didn’t click at its potential, but the Tigers still managed to outpace the Raiders. Sophia Kolbe, who will be a bit of a do-it-all specialist this season for Douglas, had five kills, three blocks and three assists. Chana Rothschild put together five kills, four blocks and two aces for the Tigers. Tuesday, Douglas fell 3-1 to Damonte Ranch in Reno. UP NEXT: Douglas (5-5, 1-2 in league) will get those reps that Townsell is hoping for with a weekend tournament – the High Sierra Invitational. Townsell said Thursday night the Tigers should get a minimum of seven matches over the weekend slate. The Tigers first contest is a 1 p.m. start against Rio Americano (Sacramento, Calif.).
Tiger girls’ tennis drops first two matchups Tuesday, the Douglas High girls’ tennis team fell to Reno, 14-4. Against Bishop Manogue on Thursday, the Tigers lost, 16-3. Joscelyn Turner won the lone singles match for the Tigers, 6-4, while Douglas also took a pair of doubles contests. Carly Van Wagenen and Laurel Benigno won their set 7-5 against two Miner freshmen. Abigail Hutchings and McKenna Chappell also earned a point with a 6-4 win Thursday. Douglas boys’ tennis falls to Reno The Tiger boys’ tennis team dropped a match to the Huskies Tuesday by a final of 14-4.
