Carson High volleyball stunned Spanish Springs on Thursday in Morse Burley Gymnasium.
The straight-set win came over the Cougars, who entered Thursday’s contest in second place in the North and a single loss in league play.
By the end of the night, Spanish Springs was 22-4 and 9-2 in league play as the Senators dispatch the Cougars 25-21, 25-22, 25-20.
Prior to Thursday’s win, Spanish Springs had beaten Carson twice, winning all five sets of play in the two matches.
“It means a lot. We got beat pretty good by Manogue the other day, so came back and tried to use that as learning,” said Carson High head coach Brittany Witter. “To sweep them, 3-0, shows we’re capable of being one of the top contenders in the league, if we choose to believe we are.”
Freshman Abby Franco led the way with nine kills while Sarah Miller put the ball away eight times.
“I think it was one of the best nights for my libero, Ava Kordonowy,” said Witter. “Abby Franco had an awesome night as well.”
UP NEXT: Carson (15-7, 5-4) will host Galena (9-11, 2-6) on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.
Senator girls tennis topples Douglas
The Carson High girls tennis team took down rival Douglas, 12-6, Tuesday.
It was the Senators’ doubles pairings that won eight sets for Carson and made the difference in the match.
Meryl Johnson and Laura Bennett went 3-0 over the Tigers with wins of 6-2, 6-4 and 7-5.
Ava Schofield and Dahlia Keating-McEllistrem also posted a perfect afternoon with set wins of 7-6, 6-2 and 6-1.
The freshmen pairing of Aubrey McAllister and Betsy Richards-Campbell took two sets for the Senators as well.
In singles, Ashleigh Naranjo had two wins while Sofia Kolupaeva and Deepti Arun each added a team point as well with a set win.
For Douglas, Joscelyn Turner had a flawless day in singles while dropping just a single game in three total sets.
Annika Wertz added two wins in singles as well for Douglas before Abigail Hutchings and McKenna Chappell secured the final point on the doubles court.
Senator boys soccer falls to Hug
The second leading scorer in the Class 5A North, Brandon Escobedo, had two goals Wednesday night as Hug defeated Carson, 2-0.
Escobedo scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season, trailing only North Valleys’ Jesse Dominguez, who has 10 goals to his credit.
The Hawks continued to maintain their hold on top of the Class 5A North standings with a 7-0-1 record in league play.
Carson High is still in search of its first league win this season, moving to 0-4-3 in Class 5A North play this season.
UP NEXT: The Senators turn right back around with Reed (2-6-1, 2-6-1) today at Reed High School for a rematch of Monday in which Carson and the Raiders drew, 1-1.
Douglas volleyball sweeps Damonte Ranch
Douglas High snagged its third win in Class 5A North play Thursday with a sweep of Damonte Ranch in Minden – 25-15, 25-18, 25-19.
Suzy Berger and Shasta Garr tied for the team high in kills with 10.
Emerson Dufloth put together nine kills while Chana Rothschild had seven.
Addy Doerr finished the night with five kills and two blocks.
Sofia Kolbe passed out 35 assists along with two aces, nine digs and a block.
Sumer Williams had 12 digs while Makaila Youmans tallied seven.
UP NEXT: Douglas (10-14, 3-7), which currently sits in sixth place in the Class 5A North standings, will travel to Reed (1-7, 1-7) next Tuesday to take on the ninth place Raiders on their home floor.
South Tahoe boys soccer beats Tigers
Douglas High boys soccer couldn’t keep up with South Tahoe on Thursday in a 7-1 loss in Minden.
The Vikings are 8-2 overall and 3-0 in Class 3A league play, putting South Tahoe at the top of the standings.
UP NEXT: Douglas – now 4-4-1 and 0-2-1 in league play – took on Bishop Manogue (5-1-1, 1-1) Friday evening.
Sierra Lutheran volleyball takes care of Sage Ridge
The Falcon volleyball team needed four sets to dispatch Sage Ridge on Tuesday in Reno.
Sierra Lutheran won the first two sets – 25-16, 25-17 – before dropping the third, 25-20, before putting the match away with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
Seniors Jade Chapman and Francesca Antonucci led the way with 10 and nine kills, respectively.
The two also combined for nine aces.
Antonucci had two blocks for the Falcons while Mikeala Christenson led the team with three stuffs.
