Churchill Arts Council

American Songwriter describes Boise, Idaho’s Eilen Jewell as, “one of America’s most intriguing, creative and idiosyncratic voices.”

Jewell is appearing Saturday in Fallon at the Oats Park Arts Center. The box office, Art Bar and galleries open at 6 p.m., with the performance beginning one hour later.

Tickets are $17 for members, $20 for nonmembers. Youth and students (with valid student ID) $10. Tickets are available at Jeff’s Copy Express or call the Churchill Arts Center at 775-423-1440.

As the reigning Queen of the Minor Key, Jewell leads a tight quartet that blends influences of surf-noir, early blues, classic country, folk, and 1960s era rock. For well over a decade, they have toured for fans from Boston to Boise and Madrid to Melbourne, playing large festivals, theaters, rock clubs, and coffeehouses.

The group has shared stages with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Loretta Lynn, Mavis Staples, Wanda Jackson, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

In addition to six of her own full-length albums, Jewell has released two albums with her country-gospel side-project, the Sacred Shakers; a tribute album to Loretta Lynn titled Butcher Holler; and a recent album of rare blues covers, Down Hearted Blues.

Fernley Republican Women

The Fernley Republican Women will meet at Fernley High School, 1300 Highway 95A, on Tuesday, April 18.

A light meal will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.  The speaker is Staci Lindberg, Lyon County clerk-treasurer. The public is invited.

Lindberg is a third generation resident of Lyon County. She was born and raised on a dairy and alfalfa farm in Yerington owned and operated by her parents Edward B and Betty M Silva. She has 37 years of private sector service in several professional fields.

Democratic Sawyer-Bryan dinner May 6

The Churchill County Democrats’ annual Sawyer-Bryan dinner and fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 6 at the Fallon Convention Center.

The dinner will begin at 6 p.m., catered by Wildhorse Café. This year’s keynote speaker, Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, will discuss the voting system and other current topics.

Aaron Sims, chair of the Rural Nevada Democratic Caucus, also will be a guest speaker and discuss what is in store for rural Nevada over the next two years.

Festivities will include a raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $45.

School-to-career

The Churchill County High School. school-to-career program will host a community career fair at the Rafter 3C Arena on Aug. 10 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Local businesses and entrepreneurs should call 775-790-1139 and register to host a table at the event. Businesses interested in offering students mentorship, internships, apprentice opportunities and scholarships should also contact Segura directly.

About 1,000 attendees are expected.

Museum mural painting

The Churchill County Museum will be working on the Naval Air Station Fallon Mural from noon to 4 p.m. Friday through Saturday, starting April 7 (weather permitting), so if you’re available any of these days, consider lending us a hand.

Young Chautauqua program

The Churchill County Museum and instructor Glen Perazzo encourage ages 12-18 to participate in the new Young Chautauqua program. Performers will learn how to bring historical figures to life on stage through theatrical monologue and in full costume.

Meetings are every Wednesday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the museum, 1050 S. Maine St., in Fallon.

This year’s character theme will focus on Fallon’s historical figures, diversity and families.

Junior livestock show

The Churchill County Junior Livestock Show and Sale takes place April 27-29 at the Rafter 3C Arena when youth in our community show the livestock they raised to community members.

This is the perfect time to team up with a neighbor, family member or co-worker to buy an animal and split the meat.

Literary reading rescheduled

Michael P. Branch is a writer, humorist, environmentalist, father, and desert rat who lives with his wife and two young daughters in the western Great Basin Desert.

His program was postponed because of weather. He is now rescheduled for May 20 from 5-7 p.m.

Youth awards

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services is seeking nominations for the Youth Serving Veterans Award.

April events:

Spring is in full swing at the Churchill County Library with a full calendar of fun events for the community.  No need to sign-up or preregister, excepted where noted, so just come on down to the library.

Special Events

• Learn-to-fly-a-drone workshops happening April 19 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

• Drop-in 3D printing drop-in workshops take place April 26 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Using the library’s 3D printer, make objects, both useful and pretty, and learn more about this popular technology.

• Reading with Rover takes place April 13 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Children read books to dogs to improve their reading skills and confidence to a decidedly captive audience. Added bonus: our furry friends are great listeners!

• Empty Bowls returns April 16 from noon to 3 p.m. Join together at the library for homemade soup and you keep the bowl which was made and donated by the Churchill County High School ceramics class. Make a non-perishable food or cash donation to participate. Proceeds benefit the Fallon Chamber of Commerce’s karma boxes and the Churchill Library Association.
