Carson High cross country has a high bar set for itself this season as the Senator girls are coming off of a Class 5A state championship.

The season-opening race was divided by class, meaning there was a race for seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen.

Jinnie Ponczoch took second in the juniors race with a time of 16:15. Right behind her was Eleanor Romeo, who was sixth in 17:18. Sydney Ingram also finished inside of the top 20.

The sophomore race contained more of the Senators’ state title winners from a year ago.

Hannah Budd smoked the field, winning the event in 15:32.

Vea Miner and Madison Hager were fourth and fifth, respectively, finishing in 16:34 and 16:35.

Ella Dooley ran as the lone senior for the Senator girls, taking seventh in 18:09.

In the freshman competition, Anna Shane won the race for Carson in 18:02 while Lillian Barker was ninth and Elizabeth Barker was 13th.

On the boys side, it was a lot of similar names.

Sawyer Macy won the junior race by more than 20 seconds, crossing the finish line in 13:06.

Alex Miner took fourth in 13:52.

Sophomore Sean Thornton nearly won his race as well, finishing in third in 13:32.

Nate Freed and Mark Walther were both top 10 for Carson in the sophomore race as well. Ivan Romeo was fifth in the freshman heat in 15:18 while Dean Parr, William Hampton and Cael Ruthenbeck were 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively.
