The Lyon County Commission this month approved an offsite agreement with Stanley Lucas to make improvements in Nevada Department of Transportation right of way that includes the construction of a traffic signal at U.S. 50 and Traditions Parkway in Dayton.

County roads director Dustin Homan told commissioners Dec. 7 NDOT requires the county as the governmental entity to apply, not the property owner or the developer.

The Traditions development in Dayton has planned for more than 500 homes along with commercial development in the region, and the county has been experiencing increasing traffic issues, going from 18,500 cars in 2014 to 21,000 cars in 2020, previous studies indicated.

In other Dayton news, the commission heard an update from NDOT on the U.S. 50 project. Based on NDOT’s speed study and the board’s feedback, the project scope has been changed. No speed limit changes have been announced at this time. The posted speed limit will remain at 60 mph east of Fortune Drive.

As part of the project, speed-management countermeasures will include two new traffic signals and safer intersections at U.S. 50 and Cardelli/River Boat roads and U.S. 50 and Six Mile Canyon/Fort Churchill roads. Also, median installations near intersections and access controls which will help improve safety.

Future improvement to the highway in this area will include controlled access alternatives, separation of local and through traffic, additional surface streets for local connections, and coordination with the county, Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Dayton community to construct these improvements. The full NDOT presentation is available on the Lyon County website as part of the agenda backup materials and on the Lyon County YouTube Channel.
