A Fernley middle school student was arrested on Monday after allegedly brining a .45 caliber handgun to school.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says it received a call at 10 a.m. Monday. They were dispatched to Silverland Middle School regarding a student possibly in possession of a firearm at school. School administration received an anonymous report regarding a student being in possession of a firearm. The student was immediately removed to the office, where he was waiting for deputies.

Once on scene, deputies conducted a pat down of the student to ensure the safety and security of the school. During the pat down, deputies located a .45 caliber handgun in the student’s pants. The handgun had ammunition in the magazine, but the chamber was empty. The student refused to provide a statement and was arrested at that time.

Deputies conducted further investigation and worked with the school administration to ensure the students and school faculty were not in any further danger.

“Through our investigation, we determined this was an isolated incident and no further threat to the school existed,” a press release said.

Due to this incident involving a juvenile, no further information is available at this time.

If you or your children have any information regarding this incident, contact the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at 775-463-6600 and request to speak to Deputy Whitten.
