Will visit Bowers: A large crowd of people from this city will spend the day at Bowers’ Mansion. There will be a free high wire exhibition and a vaudeville show. People may bring their lunches or will be provided with refreshment on the ground. The resort is rapidly becoming the headquarters for many people from this city on Sundays and mine host, Henry Riter, sees to it that each and everyone has a way-up time.

Wild story from Cherry Creek: Cherry Creek people are considerably excited over the appearance of a wild woman partly nude, and with long hair flowing down over her shoulders. G.W. Aikens who is agent for Robinson’s circus took a party of men this morning and will pay $1,000 for the capture of the woman.

Wagon train: In Placerville it’s “Wagon Train Week.” In Hangtown and Lake Tahoe, the hitching and saddling of horses and mules begins the week-long caravan trip of covered wagons, stagecoaches and riders on the historic 63-mile route made famous by John C. Fremont, Kit Carson, the 49ers, overland mail and Pony Express.

Clean it up: Mayer Marv Teixeira asked city staff to come up with a plan to get Carson Street property owners to improve the appearance of the city’s main street. The redevelopment authority was asked to come up with a plan to ask main street business owners to clean up their act.

The circus: The balloon ascension was splendidly done. Jack Lee went up astraddle of a bar rigged to the pendant halyards. He went up beautifully in the calm, still air, sailed off in a southwesterly direction and came down gracefully by Duffy’s place. The fat woman, the jolly dwarf and the Caucasian family from Belochistan greets visitors. The trick horses, tumbling and the man with the iron jaw gave surprisingly good performances.

Mills, paymaster of the V&T and C&C railroads, who has just returned from a pay trip in the Owens Lake country, says the weather is so hot down there that lizards cannot crawl along the ground more than a half dozen yards before they turn over on their backs to cool off their feet.

No link to cancer: The cellular telephone industry says research has found no link between the disease and exposure to the cell phone. This resulted from a court case where the woman had gotten brain cancer and after her death her husband filed a lawsuit.

Miss Sarah Winnemucca: Passed this way on her way to Virginia City to visit Mrs. Ditteneider. Sarah is commonly reputed to be the daughter of the old war chief of the Paiutes …and was educated by “The Sisters” at their Catholic academy in Marysville. She is enough versed in the Paiute tongue to be able to talk fluently with people of that tribe for whom she acted as interpreter. She is popularly regarded as the Queen of the Paiutes, is a plain little woman, pretty dark, dresses like an American female and speaks English, is capable, reads our language and expresses herself in writing. She is a reputed princess of the Paiute blood royal.

Mountain terrors: A party of juveniles started out for the mountains to camp out for the summer: Dwight Edwards, Dave Gregg, Will Davis and the Mighels brothers. They were armed with revolvers and cut-off shot guns. They carried nearly a mile of fishing tackle and a tent big enough to hold a revival. The provisions consisted of a slab of Chicago bacon and a box of crackers. They expect to sweep the trout streams clean.

Died: At the state Orphans’ Home Dena Reil, aged 15 years, 8 months and 8 days. The funeral took place from the Orphans Home, Rev. J.W. Hyslop officiating. The remains were followed to the grave by sorrowing orphans in carriages. Six boys from the home acted as pall bearers. Deceased was a favorite among the children of the home.

Oil: “The Bee” is enthusiastic over the tests of sprinkling Sacramento streets and county roads with oil. It says that there is no other method of road improvement as may be had as moderate cost through the proper application of California oil.

Box office: “The Firm” with Tom Cruise was the No. 1 weekend box office draw with a projected take of $13.1 million as it neared the $100 million mark in its third week of release. In second place is Clint Eastwood’s “In the Line of Fire.” Steven’s Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” was third.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
