CAPS June adoption special

CAPS is discounting adoptions for adults dogs by $50. Females are normally $150 now only $100. Males once $125 are now $75. All of our animals are healthy, spay/neutered, current on vaccinations, and microchipped.

Churchill County High School reunion Aug. 18-19

The CCHS Class of 1973 will host its 50th reunion on Friday, Aug. 18 from 5-10 p.m. at The Grid Market and Brewery, 2030 Reno Highway.

Cost is $45 per person. The celebration will continue Saturday, Aug. 19 with the annual community reunion at Oats Park. Those interested in attending will need to reach out to Jane at 775-219-6372 or email dotabcd@yahoo.com by June 30.

Fourth of July

The Fourth of July parade is on a Tuesday with a start time of 10 a.m. All entries must be submitted through a Google Form link and parade details can be found there as well.

Water information

The water call center telephone number is 775-867-5923, and it will be staffed weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The dedicated email address is Highwater23@churchillcountynv.gov.

• Residents should use the email address or telephone number for non-emergency calls.

• High-water mitigation officials have created an interactive flood modeling map which is now available on the city of Fallon and Churchill County websites. This map allows residents to enter their address in the top right-hand corner and pull up the flood modeling map for their home or business.

In addition, paper maps of the potential flood areas are posted at the main public entrance to the Churchill County Administrative Building, 155 N. Taylor St., in Fallon. This is the entrance at the corner of North Taylor and A streets. The building is open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and residents are welcome to stop by to see the maps during those hours.

• Sandbags are only available for pickup Mondays at the county’s Miners Road yard.

USDA hosts webinars

U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Rural Utilities Service will host a series of webinars to help organizations learn how to apply for financial assistance to advance clean, affordable and reliable electric energy in rural America.

USDA said there is $10.7 billion in funding under the USDA Powering Affordable Clean Energy and Empowering Rural America programs. Eligible organizations may apply for loans, grants, loan modifications and partially forgivable loans.

USDA staff will host webinars via Zoom on dates through June, July, and August.

School-to-career

The Churchill County High School. school-to-career program will host a community career fair at the Rafter 3C Arena on Aug. 10 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Local businesses and entrepreneurs should call Sue Segura at 775-790-1139 and register to host a table at the event. Businesses interested in offering students mentorship, internships, apprentice opportunities and scholarships should also contact Segura directly.

About 1,000 attendees are expected.

Home Horticulture Certificate Program

University of Nevada, Reno Extension is offering its online Home Horticulture Certificate Program, Aug. 2 to Sept. 28. The program is ideal for anyone wanting to learn more about gardening in Nevada and is also a prerequisite for those interested in becoming a certified Nevada Master Gardener.

The cost is $275 and includes recorded lectures, readings, homework and online question-and-answer sessions with specialists and local gardening professionals. Sessions take place via Zoom, from noon to 1 p.m., Thursdays, and conclude with a final exam before certification.

The certificate program includes instruction on a variety of topics, such as soils, composting, native plants, small fruits and integrated pest management. Katelyn Brinkerhoff, statewide Master Gardener coordinator, said that the online program was developed to be accessible to everyone in Nevada.

After completing their first year, Master Gardeners make an annual commitment to 10 hours of continuing education and 20 hours volunteering wherever their knowledge and skills best fit community needs.

Applications for Master Gardener training open after participants pass the Home Horticulture Certification Program final exam. Master Gardener training costs $25 and takes place Oct. 26 to Dec. 28. It includes online readings, lectures and live question-and-answer sessions, while county-specific in-person activities may also be added to the schedule.

Registration for the Home Horticulture Certificate Program is open through July 28, and can be completed online. For more information on classes, email Brinkerhoff at ExtensionMasterGardener@unr.edu.

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services is seeking nominations for the Youth Serving Veterans Award.

Cattlemen’s Teacher of the Year

The Nevada Cattlemen’s Association has started their annual quest for Teacher of the Year candidates and are asking for your help in soliciting nominations. The deadline for submitting nominations is June 16.

Nominees must be an elementary, junior high, or high school teacher who incorporates agriculture into their regular curriculum. For example, a teacher who teaches a one-week segment on agriculture and its importance to Nevada. Current Agricultural Education teachers are not eligible.

Nominees may also include teachers considered in previous years but were not selected for the award. Nominations must include a completed NCA Teacher-of-the-Year application form and an attached essay describing why the teacher is being nominated.

The winner of this award will receive a $1,000 school supply stipend donated by Nevada Agriculture Foundation. The award recipient will also be recognized during the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association’s annual awards banquet Nov. 18 at the Winnemucca Convention Center.

Summer Reading Program is back.
