The Fallon City Council recently recognized the accomplishments of the 2023 Churchill County High School archery team and unanimously approved the 2023-24 budget.

Mayor Ken Tedford, Councilwoman Kelly Frost and Councilman Paul Harmon celebrated the CCHS archery team’s ninth state championship. Annaleyah Davis was also recognized as the high school girls champion and Kaden Solinski as the high school boys champion.

Each team member was presented with an etched glass trophy commemorating the occasion.

Isaac Nestlerode said he initially joined the archery team because Cameron Christy, who was already on the team, invited him to try out. He stayed in the club because it was fun and didn’t require a lot of commitment.

Christy said he invited him because he also thought the club was fun and maybe Nestlerode would be interested in archery.

Nestlerode said his favorite part is practice where he gets to hang out with his friends and archery adviser and coach Dean Schultz. He also liked the competitions.

“I think there’s a nervousness that comes with any sort of competition, but for the most part it’s exciting and fun,” he said. “It’s more like an experience than nervousness, I guess. It’s enjoyable, for sure.”

Tanner Huckaby said he joined the team because, “It’s pretty cool and something interesting to do.” He also enjoyed the practices with Schultz.

“He’s pretty fun to hang out with on the weekdays and shoot arrows with,” Huckaby added.

Schultz, who retired from teaching this year, thanked Tedford and the city for the “awesome” and “phenomenal” ceremony. He also gave a shout out to the archery team for their efforts this season saying, “I take my hat off to them because it’s not easy and they worked hard.”

• In other news, during a recent public hearing the council unanimously approved the fiscal year 2023-24 budget. Per regulation, the tentative budget was on file available for inspection at the City Clerk’s office and the Churchill County Clerk’s Office as of April 15.

In a May 22 letter Department of Taxation Budget Analyst Kellie Grahmann stated the department had examined the tentative budget and found it to be “in compliance with the law and appropriate regulations.”

City Clerk/Treasurer Sean Richardson’s submitted a transmittal letter stating, “The City of Fallon has budgeted $1,155,700 ending fund balance for its General Fund for the year June 30, 2024. The ratio of ending fund balance to total expenditures is adequate at 8.1%.”
