The Tap Shack recently acquired new space and is using it to hold a concert series outside this summer. There are 13 events planned through Oct. 27.

“Everybody loves music outdoors, especially in the summer,” The Tap Shack owner Sandra Owens said. “We had such a rough winter and we’re looking forward to getting out under the stars.”

Owens and her husband, Walter, bought the Carson City bar, 112 Rice St., in November. Owens grew up in Gardnerville and her grandparents owned The Christmas Tree restaurant on Mount Rose Highway. She said she is a third-generation Nevadan and Walter has been here since the 1960s.

The first issue the couple found after their purchase was the lack of parking, and Owens wanted to change that right away. With an empty car dealership nearby, they negotiated a deal to use that as their parking lot with the intention of doing a summer concert series.

The events take place usually on Fridays and patrons can bring their own chairs to watch the music. There will be an outdoor bar for drinks and food trucks will be there during the events as well.

“A lot of it will be supporting local artists, supporting new genres and styles,” Owens said.

There are special events planned throughout the year including cornhole tournaments. There will be a punk rock show July 22 that will be a fundraiser for wild horses.

The first concert kicked off May 12 with traveling musicians Leslie Stevens and Max Gomez.

Owens said she hopes they can continue to do this in the years coming. She said it will help support the city and support the community and local artists by having more entertainment options.

“We’re creating that musical, kind of Mecca, environment where there’s a lot of options for live music,” she said. “The more of us who bring live music to Carson City, then the better it is for our community and gives us more options.”
