Douglas track, boys golf wrap up at state

The Douglas High girls track and field team took sixth place at the Class 5A state championship meet at Liberty High School in Henderson last weekend.

As a unit, the Tigers finished with 44 team points.

Bliss Moody was fifth in the 200-meter dash, running the quickest time of her career in 26.04 seconds.

Douglas’ 4x100 relay team, consisting of Moody, Kaylee Bradford, Elizabeth Gneiting and Grace Strabala crossed the line in 50.50 to take sixth place.

It was the second-quickest time in that event this season for the Tigers.

The 4x200 team was sixth, as well, in 1 minute, 49.49 seconds.

In the 100-meter hurdles, junior Ava Coons was sixth in 17.06.

Coons took fourth in the high jump with a personal record clearance of 5 feet, 2 inches.

Moody was sixth (5-0) in the high jump and Logan Karwoski was ninth (4-10).

Katelyn Coons finished seventh in the 300 hurdles in 49.73.

In the long jump, Moody added a fourth-place finish to her state meet, launching herself 17-2.5.

In the triple jump, Gneiting broke the personal record she set a week prior at the regional meet with a leap of 35-4.25. The result was good enough for fourth place in the event.

In the shot put, Sophie Marchut and Megan Strand finished right next to each other, as they have all season. Marchut was fifth with a toss of 33-3.5 while Strand was sixth, measuring a throw of 32-9.25.

Strand, who also qualified for the discus, threw the disc 105-8 to take fifth place and set a personal record.

On the boys side, Douglas had 10 points as team, resulting in 17th place.

Dylan Spear-Holub was seventh in both the 110 and 300 hurdles with times of 16.08 and 42.04, respectively.

In the 4x200, the Tigers took fifth as the squad of Kevin O’Connell, Connor Jackson, Joshua Nelson and AJ Thurston clocked a 1:32.05.

Douglas’ 4x800 relay team put together its third-best time of the season in 8:32.57 as Zakery Waddell, Joel Nord, Luke Davis and Trace Estes finished seventh.

Walters eighth at 5A state golf meet

Douglas sophomore Brock Walters backed up his Class 5A Northern Region title with an eighth-place finish at Red Hawk Golf Course late last week.

Walters was the top scorer of all Northern Nevada golfers at the state meet with a 77-73–150.

Shadow Ridge’s Bridger Johnson won the state title with a 71-74–145.

Grant Stephens, Wyatt Prather and Reese Torres all put together two-day scores of 172, tying for 36th.

Jace DesJardins and Hatcher Leiknes were 42nd and 45th, respectively.

As a team, Douglas took sixth with a score of 666.

Bishop Gorman won the team title, shooting a 593 over the two-day event.
