Bighorn news: Electricity lessons and early enrollment

Fourth-grade students were taught a lesson in electricity by NV Energy representatives Ron Farley and Mike Gray on Nov. 17. The presentation came at the conclusion of the students’ amplified science unit on energy conversions.

The presentation included showing the students real life examples of electricity and scenarios involving electricity. It also stressed how powerful electricity can be and the importance of being safe around it.

“It is great to have NV Energy take time out of their schedule to share their knowledge with the students,” said Rochelle Tisdale, chief academic officer. “To have them reinforce what is learned in the classroom and bring real world experience enhances the students’ understanding is incredibly valuable. We appreciate their contribution.”

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: GENESIS JOHNSON

Graduating Oasis senior Genesis Johnson wants to remind future students that their time in high school goes by quickly.

“My advice for future students is to focus on the now and not the later,” Johnson said. “Be sure to enjoy each moment as it comes. Your high school years go by fast so enjoy the ride.”

Johnson’s favorite moments include going to the school dances and bonfires.

“Some of my favorite memories at Oasis are from the dances. My favorite one was the western themed dance we did,” she said. “The fun from watching everyone try to ride the mechanical bull will live in my mind forever.”

Johnson started at Oasis her sophomore year.

“I’ve really enjoyed the smaller class. I also enjoyed creating friendships and growing academically,” she said.

Part of that growth has come from her favorite class and teacher Eric Grimes.

“I would like to thank Mr. Grimes. Mr. Grimes helped me see problems and options from more than one point of view. He helped me learn how not to be one sided and see the world from many points of view,” Johnson said.

Grimes’ class was also Johnson’s favorite.

“I enjoyed the information that was presented in his classes,” she added. “Mr. Grimes had a great way of teaching the students how to understand both sides of political party topics and yet stay neutral.”

As for what’s next for the senior, she will continue her education in Nevada.

“I have been accepted to Great Basin College where I plan to enroll in their Veterinary Tech Program,” she said. “I want to continue to learn and grow in veterinary science so I can work in that field.”

Johnson will graduate in May with her high school diploma and finish her associate of arts degree from Western Nevada College in the summer.

OPEN ENROLLMENT STARTS

Open enrollment for the 2024-25 school year for Oasis Academy Kindergarten through 12th grade began Nov. 27. The enrollment application is online at oanv.org. Completed applications should be submitted at the school’s front desk from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

The open enrollment period ends Feb. 22. The lottery drawing for kindergarten students will be held Feb. 23.
