Senior Gabriel Schumann started at Oasis Academy as a freshman online during COVID. It was a new school with new people, and he quickly learned what makes Oasis different.

“Once I was able to attend in person, I felt noticed and cared about by the teachers and staff and the overall environment was way better than my previous school,” Schumann said.

Two people helped create that environment for Schumann.

“I would like to thank Elizabeth Polish and Jackie Bogdanowicz. Both teachers and staff members were there from the beginning and assisted me if I needed any help. I'll miss hanging out with Mrs. Polish when I'm bored and I'll miss all the fun adventures I've had with Ms. B during The FFA state conventions. Thank you,” he said.

Prom his freshman year also set the tone for what he would experience at Oasis, which makes it his favorite memory from school.

“I would have to say that my overall favorite memory from Oasis is from Prom during freshman year. After being at home for such a long period it was amazing to finally get out of our houses and go to the dance,” he said. “We all got to interact with one another which was amazing, and the dance was very exciting.”

Schumann has enjoyed his classes through the dual enrollment Jump Start Program.

“My favorite class that I took so far would have to be ceramics with Mrs. Jeanne Evatt. It was definitely a new art style for me, but I really enjoyed being able to work hands on with the clay,” he said.

A talented musician, Schumann has participated in local productions. This year he played cello in the Fiddler on the Roof production as part of the pit orchestra.

“This production and the music were very exciting, I was really sad to see the show come and go but just being able to be part of the experience was fantastic,” he said.

Schumann will graduate in May with his high school diploma and continue at Western Nevada College to complete his associate of science degree. He then plans to transfer to the University of Nevada, Reno.

“My biggest tip of advice for future students is that you need to stay motivated and on top of all your assignments, It is very surprising how easily your grade can slip if you don't stay ahead of the game,” Schumann closed.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: AUBREY VAUGHN

Graduating Oasis Academy senior Aubrey Vaughn has valuable advice for incoming students.

“My advice to future students is that nothing is perfect, and that you don’t have to be perfect to succeed,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn has been attending Oasis since fifth grade and says it has been a memorable experience. She is very appreciative of three teachers.

“I really appreciate my two years in FFA and everything I learned from Jackie Bogdanowicz. The other people I am very grateful to are Andy Lennon and Eric Grimes. They have supported me through my high school career,” she said.

Her favorite classes were political science and ancient history because of projects.

Vaughn will graduate in May with her high school diploma and Associate of Business degree from Western Nevada College. She then plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno.
