Last Friday night’s 24-13 loss to Wooster stung for the Carson football team.

After a scoreless first half, the turnover bug continued to cause problems, as the Colts were able to capture seven points on an interception return for a touchdown to go up by two scores in the fourth quarter.

Now 1-1 in Class 5A Division III league play, Carson will turn to Galena this week for a road game against the Grizzlies.

The Senators were able to run for 240 yards on 37 carries against Wooster, but Carson will have to show some ability to move the ball through the air this Friday night.

Passing is an area Galena isn’t afraid of.

The Grizzlies have thrown for nearly 1,000 yards through the air along with seven scores, compared to the Senators’ 210 yards.

Junior Ben Imse (No. 17) has been Galena’s main target, whether its been thrown to him by Colson Kermode or Drey Watson.

The Grizzlies are a bit banged up, which could give the Senators some opportunities, but holding onto the football has to be a top concern for Carson.

Running game

Of course, Carson is going to go to the ground often.

The Senators might look for the big play over the top, but head coach Ryan Boshard has been adamant the team has to establish the ground game.

Christian Rey, who 101 yards and a touchdown last week, leads the squad with 337 rushing yards and three scores.

Angelo Macias and Jake Weninger will also be called upon to help move the chains as each have a rushing touchdown this season.

They’ll want to try an avoid too much contact with Galena senior Jojo Czyz, who has 74 total tackles this season — the second-most in Class 5A Div. III.

Juniors Dylan Sullivan and Matt Ritenhouse are both in the top 10 in the league in tackles, as well, with 62 and 61, respectively.

All in all, Galena has four interceptions and has recovered eight fumbles this season.

Both teams are 1-1 in league play and will be looking for a leg up on one-another with only a handful of league games remaining.
