Churchill County Museum lecture series

The Churchill County Museum’s fall lecture series is on Where the Ghosts Are.

Each presentation is on Tuesday and begins at 6 p.m. in the museum’s main lecture room. Admission is free.

Janice Oberding, an author, paranormal researcher and history buff, will present “Nevada’s Famous and Infamous Ghosts: A look at some of Nevada’s famous and infamous ghosts and the places they haunt” on Oct. 24.

She is a paranormal researcher and history buff (particularly Nevada and the west) and was instrumental in the creation of Truckee Meadows Community College’s Paranormal Series which is still active today.

At TMCC, she has taught non-credit classes in book publishing, foreign film, and ghost hunting 101 for which she was awarded the non-credit instructor of the year award. Oberding investigates ghosts and hauntings throughout Nevada and across the US. As a historian/paranormal expert, she has appeared in numerous TV shows such as Ghost Adventures, Dead Famous and Ghost Hunters.


Carson Chamber Singers

Carson Chamber Singers will present “Joseph & James” Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church in Fallon.

The program combines classical and contemporary music. It features Joseph Haydn's “Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo,” known as “Kleine Orgelmesse (The Little Organ Mass).” Songs by James Taylor include "Mocking Bird," "Sweet Baby James," "Up on the Roof," "That Lonesome Road," "Fire and Rain" and "Your Smiling Face."

General admission tickets are $18. Discount tickets for seniors (age 62 plus), students and members of the Carson City Symphony Association are $15. Youth ages 18 and under are admitted free. Tickets are available online at CCSymphony.com, on the Carson City Symphony Facebook page and at the door.

Founded in 1985 as a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, the Carson Chamber Singers is open to singers high school age and above. Participation is free.

With five or more concerts each year, chorus members have sung with the Reno Philharmonic and perform regularly with the Carson City Symphony. They have serenaded audiences at several venues in northern Nevada and as far west as Sacramento.

Concerts are supported in part by public funds through a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts and by private donations.


Grad Night Casino Night

The Churchill County High School Grad Night Committee invites 21 and over to a casino night and taco bar at the Fallon Convention Center Oct. 21 starting at 6 p.m. Door prizes will be available as well as prizes for the top three money winners of the night.

Tickets may be purchased for $100 each at His Inspirations (200 S. Maine St.) and Jeff’s Copy Express (235 S. Maine St.).

The fundraiser supports a safe and sober grad night celebration for the CCHS Class of 2024.


Spooktacular

The Maine Street Spooktacular will be Oct. 31 from 4-6 p.m. features family-friendly activities during the spookiest night of the year.

Attendees can trick-or-treat in costume on Maine Street at the business booths and trunk-or-treat. The celebration will also include bounce houses, face painting, a cutest costume contest, cornhole, pumpkin painting, a DJ, the Bloodmobile, storytime with the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office, activities from the Churchill County Library and Churchill County Museum a Fallon/Churchill Fire Department fire truck, the Domestic Violence Intervention bus and an obstacle course.


Churchill County Library

October is “Teentober Month” with several activities geared to teenagers. Come by the Churchill County Library on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. for an activity. Find out more about spine poetry, book reviews, Teen Library Club and more during “Teentober month.”

A reminder that the library is closed on Friday, Oct. 27 to observe Nevada Day.

Special events:

• Drop-in 3D printing workshop takes place Oct. 25 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Using the library’s 3D printer, make objects, both useful and pretty, and learn more about this popular technology.

• Stop Motion Animation workshop happening on Oct. 18 at 3:30 p.m.

• Need a career change? Let EmployNV help you with aspects of finding a new job on Oct. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the library. EmployNV staff will help you with aspects of finding a new job.

• Elementary Book Club meets on Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. for those in elementary school.

• Teen Library Council meeting on Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. Council members help decide teen programming, books and other materials available in the library and earn volunteer hours at the same time. Attendance is free and snacks are provided.

• New book discussion groups for adults continues on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. To observe Halloween this month, bring your own book about ghosts to discuss.

• All Day Trick-or-Treat on Oct. 31. Come by the library on Halloween to show us your costume and get a goodie for your trick-or-treat bag.


Pennington Life Center

Stop by the Pennington Life Center in October for the many activities planned for the month.

Plenty of good eats at the Pennington Life Center: All are welcome to partake. Lunch served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays. Cost is $6 for those under age 60 and a suggested donation of $3 for those 60 and older.


Rotary Club of Fallon

Rotary meets every Tuesday at noon at the Stockman’s Steakhouse. Each meeting usually has a speaker. Guests are welcome.


BLM oil and gas lease sale

The Bureau of Land Management Nevada State Office has announced an oil and gas lease sale scheduled for Dec. 5 to offer four oil and gas parcels totaling 3,498.342 acres in Nevada.

The BLM completed scoping on these parcels in June 2023 and held a public comment period in September 2023 on the parcels, potential deferrals, and the related environmental analysis. A 30-day public protest period to receive additional public input opened today and will close Nov. 6.
