The pandemic couldn’t keep Grandma’s Fabrics doors closed indefinitely with the shop’s assortment of products.

The Carson City shop that had been closed for about a year and a half has reopened at 1982 E. William St. as of Sept. 1, and owner Jan Moritz is ready to welcome back the quilters and hobbyists looking for the fabrics she provided before the pandemic.

“This town needs a decent fabric shop that has economical fabrics but yet good quality,” Moritz said.

She originally opened in March 2019 offering approximately 700 original bolts of fabric from about $4 to $10 a yard. The store also provides handmade crafts and quilts for sale, jams, pancake mixes, soups and dog treats, some of which are made by a Carson City resident.

For those interested in learning how to quilt or sew, classes are available on Saturdays.

Business was doing well during the pandemic but Moritz said she closed due to health conditions.

“The gift shop has done very well since we reopened, too,” Moritz said.

Visitors come in from all over the region and as far as Elko County. Residents of Yerington who take up a sewing needle enjoy what she has to offer when they’re in town, and most are preparing gifts for the holidays with Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner. Placemats and table runners are popular items most come in for fabric for since she reopened, with others interested in making purses or other gifts.

“I can’t complain when a lot of my customers are returning customers,” she said.

The store is now two stores down from her original location at 1982 E. William St.
