Douglas High School football is 6-1 after blanking Hug, 54-0, Friday night.
While the score line is impressive on its own, the Tigers are on the verge of making history in multiple facets with the team they’re putting on the turf every week.
Douglas senior running back Connor Jackson rushed for five touchdowns, bringing his season total to 19.
The single-season rushing touchdown record for Douglas High School is 27, set in 1997 by Kevin Lehr.
Not only did Jackson rush for five scores, he also had a pick-six to open the contest.
“I think his last one (rushing touchdown) was most impressive,” said Douglas High head coach Kyle Mays. “He pushed four or five dudes off of him. … He just made it all work from seven yards out. It was pretty impressive.”
Pacing the record books
Jackson didn’t need to thank his offensive line this week as Mays beat him to the punch.
To be able to clear the way for five touchdowns can’t go unnoticed.
“Our o-line was the brightest spot all night. They had a couple breakdowns, but nothing super serious,” said Mays. “They opened up holes and we had significant big plays.”
With Jackson’s pick-six, Douglas has three defensive scores this season, putting the Tigers one defensive score away from matching the school record.
Jackson nearly had another pick-six, but wasn’t able to keep his feet inbounds.
Three times Douglas High has had four defensive scores in a season – 2006, 2010, 2011.
With three regular season games remaining, the Tigers have a chance to rewrite another school record.
In total, Douglas had five interceptions in the win as Aaron Moss, Zach Jackson and Zach Westbrook each had an interception of their own to accompany Connor Jackson’s two picks.
After Jackson’s big day, the Tigers were able to get some other pieces involved to close out the contest.
Owen Evans, who returned this week from a preseason injury, booted out on a pass play and found Andrew Strand for a 40-yard touchdown.
“I think Owen is going to give us a little bit of a spark, being back on the field on offense and defense,” said Mays. “I think with him and Jackson Ovard, I think it gives us a pretty dynamic duo at quarterback.”
The final touchdown came from Isiah Middaugh on a power run.
UP NEXT: Douglas (6-1, 2-0 in Class 5A Div. III league play) will hit the road next Friday to take on North Valleys (1-5, 0-2).
