The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to stay vigilant against scam telephone calls.

In scam calls, the original callers are claiming to be a family member who was involved in an accident. They pretend to be injured, in legal trouble, and unable to speak appropriately. They give a phone number for the victims to call, and once the victim calls, victims are asked for money to pay for legal fees.

In some of these scams, the victims give their address to the scammers and give money to people who show up at their house.

When receiving scam telephone calls:

• Do not provide personal or financial information

• Do not agree to meet anyone in person

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating reported telephone scams in which the scammers showed up at victim’s houses to collect money.

If anyone has been a victim of a telephone scam and the scammer is currently at the house to collect money, they are encouraged to call 911 or Carson City Dispatch non-emergency at 775-887-2677.
