Fallon boys join Greenwave girls in 3A posteason

After the Churchill County High School girls basketball team clinched a playoff berth, the Greenwave boys team followed suit.

Fallon defeated Lowry, 61-46, on Friday at the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium to punch its ticket to next week’s regional tournament.

The Greenwave (4-4) can finish no worse than fourth in the 3A East, trailing Spring Creek (5-4) for the third spot, while Fernley (8-0) clinched the division over Elko (7-2).

On the other side of the region is the 3A West where Hug (8-0) clinched the division over Wooster (6-2) while North Valleys and South Tahoe, both at 4-4, are battling for the final two playoff berths.

In the girls region, Fallon clinched a playoff berth after sweeping Elko and Spring Creek two weeks ago.

The Lady Wave (5-3) is locked in at No. 3 despite falling to Lowry last week. Lowry (7-1) and Fernley (8-0) meet Saturday to determine the No. 1 seed while Spring Creek (3-6) and Elko (2-7) are battling for the fourth seed.

In the 3A West, North Valleys (8-0) clinched the division while South Tahoe (6-2) and Wooster (5-3) are jousting for the second seed. Hug (2-6), Truckee (2-6) and Sparks (1-7) are in the mix for the final spot.

Fallon enters the final week of the season with home games against Dayton on Wednesday and Fernley on Friday for Senior Night.

The regional tournament begins Monday at the higher seeds before moving to Elko on Friday and Saturday. The regional winner and runner-up advance to the state tournament at Lawlor Events Center in two weeks.

Three players scored in double figures to help Fallon’s boys team clinch a playoff spot in its win over Lowry.

Senior Baylor Sandberg scored 16 points, freshman Calin Anderson had 11, including three 3-pointers, and junior Trevor Hyde added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Anderson and Sandberg each had six rebounds. Senior Luke Glinka and Anderson recorded two blocks, senior Brady Alves had five assists and Sandberg finished with three steals.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Lowry girls set the tone early in the second meeting, racing to an 11-point lead in the first quarter.

But Fallon didn’t go down without a fight unlike the first meeting, going toe-to-toe with the defending state champs during the rest of the game. Fallon was outscored by only seven points after Lowry took a 19-8 lead into the second quarter.

Sophomore Jada Anastasio led the team with 15 points and senior Madasyn Moyle added nine. Senior Zoey Jarrett and sophomore Janessa Bettencourt each scored three points, and junior Vernita Fillmore and freshman Raegan Johnson each had two. Senior Jessalyn Lewis, Fillmore and Bettencourt each had five rebounds, and sophomore Dylan Faught and Anastasio each had four.
