Senators fall to Douglas at Peccole

Douglas High School baseball took advantage of some miscues from Carson en route to a 15-2 win over the Senators in five innings Monday night at Peccole Park.

The first league meeting of the season for both sides came at the University of Nevada, Reno – sporting a neat opportunity for both teams to play on a collegiate field.

“It gives the kids a glimpse of what they could have with hard work,” said Douglas High head coach Jim Tucker. “It’s an opportunity to see where they could make it.”

Douglas scored in every frame of the five-inning win, including five runs in the home half of the first.

The Tigers first two runs came across the plate on Senator errors before Jackson Ovard drove in two more runs on a single to center field.

Thomas Young, who ended the game 1-for-2 with two walks, was credited with his first of three RBIs on a bases loaded walk.

Ovard knocked in the Tigers’ only run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly before plating two more in the bottom of the third on a single to right field.

The junior infielder ended the night 2-for-4 with five RBIs, crediting his approach for his big game.

“I was trying to stay middle-away, trying to hit the other side,” said Ovard.

Jake Davis was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win for the Tigers while Luke Main was also credited with an RBI on a hit by pitch.

Tiger catcher Jeffrey Peters was 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the third that gave Douglas a 10-0 lead.

On the bump, Young threw four no-hit innings while fanning eight Senator batters.

Four walks in the fourth inning allowed the Senators to score their two runs.

Aaron Tekansik took over in the fifth and struck out a pair.

Finding ways on base

Carson High ended the night with one hit, but the Senators were able to draw eight walks Monday.

Tanner Bohemier and freshman catcher Chase Grundy each had a pair of walks. Grundy also picked up an RBI on a bases loaded walk in the fourth inning.

Bohemier struck out in the Senators’ next at-bat, but Jeremy Hernandez was able to score on a wild pitch.

In the third inning, the Senators were able to draw two walks to leadoff the inning, but a sacrifice bunt and a pair of strikeouts kept them from getting on the board.

It was a similar story in the first inning after Carson had two on with one out, but a groundout and a strikeout ended the threat.

Fielding will be an area for the Senators moving forward as five errors allowed Douglas to score eight unearned runs.

UP NEXT: Douglas (2-0, 1-0) will be at home Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with five non-league games over the course of those three days. Carson (0-3, 0-1) host Reed (4-2) Thursday for another league tilt before traveling to take on the Raiders again Saturday.
