Bighorn news: Volleyball, 100 days, and Senior Spotlight

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: RAEGYNN MAYHUE

Graduating senior Raegynn Mayhue was part of the original Oasis Academy kindergarten class when the school opened in 2011. Although she has attended the school for some time, her favorite memory at Oasis Academy is one from the start of this school year.

“My favorite memory from Oasis was the seniors painting our parking spots. I know that was before school started, but seeing everyone’s creative ideas come to life was awesome,” Mayhue said. “Also seeing friends on a nice summer day and getting together as a class was enjoyable.”

Mayhue has appreciated the atmosphere and staff’s commitment to student success.

“My time at Oasis Academy College Prep feels as if it has been brief, but ultimately enjoyable. The teachers and staff are accommodating and are passionate about the students' futures,” she said.

That staff includes Mrs. Elizabeth Polish.

“I would like to thank Mrs. Polish,” she said. “She is always a joy to be around, and I appreciate that she welcomes students to hang out in her space.”

Mayhue’s advice for future students to take advantage of the resources available.

“Utilize the library and study hours. Even as underclassmen you have free range in the library and it can really help to be in a new and different space to do schoolwork,” she said.

Mayhue will graduate in May with her high school diploma and her Associate of Arts degree from Western Nevada College in the fall. She plans to attend culinary school in New York City.

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL

Oasis kindergarten, first, and second graders celebrated the 100th day of school on March 6.

Students have been preparing for the day by practicing counting to 100.

“We practiced counting to 100 with 100 items they had each brought from home,” said Janet Renfroe, kindergarten teacher. “We had kids bring in pennies, candy, paperclips, cereal, etc., and they used it to count to 100 by ones and then by groups of 10.”

The students also discussed being 100 years old and playing math games.

“Classes also did racing math games with partners where they had to roll dice and count that many spaces to get to the end of the game board,” she said. “They also were blown away to learn that the oldest person in the world was 122 and lived in France.”

To help celebrate the accomplishments students dressed as the older generations and did the how many licks activity. They had to lick their sucker and record how many licks it took to get to the center, counting as they went.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM DYES FOUNTAIN

The eighth grade girls volleyball team won the Sagebrush League Lake Division Championship on Feb. 22. To celebrate the win, the city of Fallon invited the team to dye the Maine Street Fountain Bighorn Blue.

“This is a large team that had competitive drive and heart,” said Coach Ali Montgomery. “They trusted the process from the start of the season and believed in themselves and their teammates. Their persistence and dedication led us to a successful season.”

The celebration included pizza at Pizza Barn and cupcakes.

“We appreciate the city of Fallon for helping us celebrate the championship,” she said.
