The Greenwave baseball team rebounded from an earlier loss to Fernley in a tournament to sweep its cross-valley rival in convincing fashion last weekend.

Fallon outscored Fernley, 38-1, in the three-game road series that began with a 15-0 win on Friday. The Greenwave (10-3 overall, 3-0 3A East) won Saturday’s doubleheader 13-1 and 10-0.

Fallon hosted Douglas on Tuesday and travels to Dayton this weekend for a three-game series before playing at Spanish Springs on Monday.

Junior Eric Cornejo was a triple shy of the cycle in Friday’s win as he drove in five runs in three at-bats. Junior Nathaniel Zackery drove in four runs on two doubles, and junior Trevor Hyde finished with three singles and three RBIs.

Junior James Kelsey pitched all three innings of the shortened game, striking out six while giving up two walks and two hits.

Four players drove in two runs in Saturday’s first game with senior Baylor Sandberg and Kelsey each recording three hits and two RBIs. Hyde and junior Evan Giovanetti each drove in two on one hit, and seniors Brady Alves, Isaac Martinez, Zackery and junior Anthony Juarez each drove in one.

Sandberg recorded 13 of the 15 outs by strikeout as he allowed one unearned run and four walks in five innings on the hill.

Sandberg continued his momentum into the final game as he and Kelsey each finished with three hits. Sandberg doubled and drove in one while Kelsey had two doubles and two RBIs. Zackery drove in two on two hits, including a double, and Giovanetti singled twice and had one RBI.

Senior Bryce Adams went all six innings, striking out 10 and allowing two hits and three walks.

SOFTBALL

After dropping Saturday’s doubleheader opener, the Lady Wave softball team rallied to win the series over its rival.

Fallon defeated Fernley, 5-2, on Friday but fell in Saturday’s first game, 4-1. Fallon, though, came back to win the final game, 4-3, in Fernley.

Fallon (5-2 overall, 2-1 3A East) travels to Dayton this weekend for a three-game series before hosting Damonte Ranch next week.

The Lady Wave broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning of Saturday’s second game to lead 4-1 before the Vaqueros scored one in the bottom frame. The hosts scored again in the final inning before Fallon closed the door for the win.

Despite tallying only four hits to Fernley’s 10, Fallon’s offense came through when it mattered most.

Senior Reece Hutchings led the team with a two-run double in the fifth inning to break the tie while freshman Layla Walker’s hit-by-pitch led to another run.

Junior Vernita Fillmore went the distance and held off Fernley’s rally in the final inning after the second and third players singled. Fillmore, who struck out three, got Fernley to fly out to senior Kiley Wallace in center to end the game.

In Friday’s series-opening win, Fallon jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Fernley scored two in the sixth.

Junior Taralynn Vershum powered Fallon to the win, coming a triple shy of the cycle, as she drove in two on three hits. Walker doubled and singled twice, while Wallace and junior Dana Buckmaster each had two hits. Buckmaster, Fillmore and junior Tutie Ames each drove in one.

Sophomore Janessa Bettencourt pitched a complete game, striking out seven while issuing two walks and allowing two earned runs.

Fernley led all the way in Saturday’s first game, scoring three runs in the first two innings.

Wallace had the team’s only RBI and Fillmore doubled.

Bettencourt took the loss, going 1.2 innings before Fillmore finished the game.
