Douglas baseball, softball continue winning ways

Douglas High School softball won its eighth game in a row Thursday, run-ruling Damonte Ranch by a 12-0 final.

Lilyann Lee opened the game with her fifth home run of the year in the first inning before belting her sixth in the fourth.

Lee finished the game 3-for-3 with five RBI, giving her the team lead with 19.

Talia Tretton was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday’s win. She also struck out 12 in the circle and allowed one hit.

Zora Simpson, Peyton Simpson, Maddie Gooch and Lexi Hyde all knocked in a run in the win, as well.

UP NEXT: Douglas (10-3, 4-0 in Class 5A North) won’t return to action until April 5 when the Tigers host Alhambra (3-1).

DOUGLAS DOWNS DAMONTE TWICE

The Tiger baseball team kept its undefeated season going with wins of 12-2 and 12-5 over Damonte Ranch on Thursday and Saturday.

In Thursday’s win, Thomas Young was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a home run for Douglas.

Senior Jake Davis drove in three runs while going 2-for-3 at the dish with a double.

Junior Jeffrey Peters was perfect, putting together a 4-for-4 day with a pair of RBIs.

Keegan Freeman tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts.

In Saturday’s win, Young once again plated four RBIs with a 2-for-4 day.

Junior Jackson Ovard recorded three RBIs while going 2-for-5 at the dish with a double.

Aaron Moss, Peters and Davis each knocked in an RBI in the second victory.

UP NEXT: Douglas (10-0, 3-0 in Class 5A North league play) will play De La Salle (6-2) Saturday at Reno High School, starting at 11 a.m.


TIGER TRACK RUNS WELL AT MANOGUE

Douglas High School track and field has put up some impressive results and this weekend was no different.

On the girls’ side, Grace Strabala won the 100-meter dash at Bishop Manogue in 12.84 seconds while Bliss Moody was third in 13.07.

Strabala also took the top spot in the 200 in a time of 27.42.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Katelyn Coons tied for third with a time of 17.38.

Her elder sister, Ava, took second in the 300-meter hurdles in 51.35.

Douglas’ 4x100, 4x200 and 4x800 relay teams were all second-best on the day.

Elizabeth Gneiting won the long jump (16 feet, 11 inches) and was second in the high jump with a personal record mark of five feet even.

Gneiting also took third in the triple jump with a mark of 32-1.

Stella White took third in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-6.

On the boys’ side, Luke Davis was fourth in the 1,600 in 4:41.15.

The Tigers 4x100 team of Zakery Weddell, CJ Bera, Mateo Esquivel and Zach Jackson won in 45.07.

In the 4x800, Douglas was second in 8:45.94.


TIGER SWIM FALLS TO RENO

Both Douglas High School boys and girls swim teams took on Reno over the weekend.

Scott Peck, Matthew Yturbide, Lucas Goss and Matthew Sutton combined to win the 200-yard medley relay in 2:01.81 on the boys’ side.

Allen Baker won the 1-meter diving competition for the boys with a score of 252.65 points, while Austin Pitts was second with a mark of 222.10.

On the girls’ side, senior Kiera Duffy won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.97.

Kiley Wagstaff was second in the 1-meter dive competition with a score of 137.90.

Caitlin Taylor took second in the 100-yard fly while Carli Stevenson was also second in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Reno boys outscored Douglas, 147 to 92. On the girls’ side, the Huskies bested the Tigers, 191 to 110.
