Dayton wrestlers beat Yerington, Silver Stage

Dayton High's Tim Torres came through with the pin that Dayton High needed to give the Dust Devil wrestling team a 42-40 win over Yerington on Wednesday.


The Dust Devils also beat Silver Stage 51-18 in the tri-meet. Dayton was trailing 40-30 when Torres at 215 pounds wrestled Yerington's Ryan Gillmore, who was leading Torres.


But Torres was able to turn Gillmore in the second period and won by pin to bring the Dust Devils to 40-36. Justin Seals was then able to walk out and take the victory for Dayton when he won by forfeit at heavyweight.


Also for Dayton, Scott Redwine (145) won by pin. Chris Thompson (103), David Grose (112), Stephen Novello (140) and Austin Niemi all won for Dayton as well.


For Yerington, Jesse Lemos (130), Steven Gutierrez (135) and Robert Basney (152) all won by pin. Shawn McCarty (160) won 17-6 for the Lions. In addition, Brandon Soukup (119), Chris Dixon (125) and Derek Wellock (189) won for Yerington.


Against Silver Stage, John Hurt (135), Novello and Torres all won by pin. Niemi beat Silver Stage's Tony Laffon 10-8. Also winning for Dayton were Thompson, Grose, Redwine, Mike Mendez (152) and Jeremy Stanfield (160). Winning by pin for Silver Stage were Justin Starks (125), Jonathan Aviero (130) and Tyson Konalulu (heavyweight).
