Carson City hunkers down for Super Bowl

Today is Super Sunday, a national ritual in which hundreds of millions of people will gather to party and wager, and yes a football game will be played, too.

That football game is the Super Bowl in which the St. Louis Rams will face the New England Patriots at the New Orleans Superdome. The Rams are favored by 14 points. Super Bowl XXXVI will be begins at 3:21 p.m. and will be broadcast on Fox 11.

Some area events include:

-- The Carson City Raiders Booster Club will host a Super Bowl party from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at Joe Bob's Hot Springs Road House, 1510 Hot Springs Road. The party includes raffles, plus a live auction from 1:30-3 p.m., which will include one-of-a-kind and autographed memorabilia.

A drawing for a "Chuckie" doll, autographed by Oakland Raiders Head Coach Jon Gruden along with a mini-helmet autographed by former head coach John Madden will be held at half-time. Tickets are $1 and available up until the half-time show. Winner need not be present to win. Certificates of authenticity come with each item.

-- Super Bowl Party at Red's Old 395 Grill, 2 p.m. Call 887-0395.

-- Young at Heart will hold a Super Bowl party, potluck and games social Sunday at the Douglas County Senior Center. Doors open at 11 a.m. and food will be served at noon. Bring an entree, salad or dessert large enough to serve six to eight people and your favorite game. Call 265-2312 or 783-6455.

-- Lizard Lounge Super Bowl party at the Pi-ion Plaza begins 1 p.m., food and drink specials, raffle and more at the Pi-ion. Call 885-9000.

-- Collect autographs and share a Super Bowl cheer with former Oakland Raider Carlton Oates, former Green Bay Packer Macarthur Lane and former San Francisco 49er Ted Kwalick at 2 p.m. in the main bar of the Carson Nugget. Join the Nugget crew for food and drink special during the game. Call 882-1626.

-- At the Carson Valley Inn the Shannon Ballroom and Cabaret Lounge are reserved for Super Bowl 36. The fun begins at noon. There is a $15 cover for the ballroom events, but the lounge act is free. Former 49er defensive end Dan Colchico will attend both events. Call 783-6679.
