Five nursing scholarships will be awarded at the Feb. 12 Carson-Tahoe Hospital Auxiliary luncheon.

Named after former Auxiliary president Ursula Daines, the scholarship has been in existence since 1972. It was renamed in honor of Daines after her death May 3, 2001.

Daines, wife of former State Controller Darrel R. Daines, died last spring, and at that time numerous contributions were made in her name to the Auxiliary.

To augment these contributions, the Daines family has created an ongoing trust in Ursula's memory to continue to help fund the yearly scholarship program.

Daines served as president of the Auxiliary from 1994 to 1995 and had also served as chairwoman of the scholarship committee.

She was an educator with a master's degree from Utah State University. She taught school for over 30 years in Utah and Nevada.

"An educational scholarship in Ursula's name is a fitting memorial to a woman who was a life-long learner," said Daines' husband, Darrel.

"She was passionate about the need for women to be equipped with both an education and a career."

Darrel Daines said both he and his wife had to rely on nurses.

"Like most people who have lived for any considerable length of time, Ursula and I have received a considerable amount of care at the hands of nurses, for which we have always been grateful. The scholarships are our way of saying thank you to the members of a noble profession."

Margie West, the current president of the Auxiliary, will preside over the meeting. Anyone wishing to make a contribution to the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Auxiliary/Ursula Daines Memorial Scholarship Fund may do so by contacting Maudie Long at 882-1852.
