Obituary: Joan Houghton

A memorial service for Joan Seaver Houghton, 83, a Carson City resident for the past 50 years and Nevada resident for 56 years, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Houghton died April 27, 2003, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Carson City. She was born Nov. 2, 1919, in Boston to F. Peter and Barbara Brown of West Kirby, England (near Liverpool).

She met and married James Vincent Houghton of Luning in June 1947 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Houghton was very active in many community activities. She was a den mother for Boy Scouts, a PTA member, a volunteer at Friends in Service Helping, a member of Proscenium Players Inc., celebrated monthly birthdays at Carson Convalescent Center, served communion at Nevada Cares, volunteered at Carson-Tahoe Hospital for more than 45 years (for which she received commendation from the queen of England) and was an active and long-time member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Among her survivors are her son Peter of Koh Samui, Thailand; sons and daughters-in-law Roy and Pamela Houghton of Carson City and Patrick and Judy Gordon Houghton of Vancouver, Wash.; grandchildren Adam Houghton, Sarah Billings and her husband Josh of Carson City, Elise McClain of Fort Bragg, N.C., and David Eagle of Sandpoint, Idaho; and great-granddaughter Natasha McClain.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Joan Houghton Memorial Fund at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Funeral Home.
