Galena, Dayton boys win in hoops

After pulling out a win in a physical game against Elko, the Galena High boys basketball team now faces its biggest game of the season.


Galena was able to hold off Elko 73-52 on Friday to improve to 7-2 in the High Desert League. The Grizzlies host Reed today in a game for first place in league.


"We played hard, but they played harder," said Galena coach Tom Maurer about Elko. "It was just absolutely physical."


Tommy Myers scored 23 points, Derek Lorenzen had 20 points and Dalton Turnbow added 11 points for Galena. Brian Klekas hit 7-of-8 three pointers -- many from way out -- on his way to scoring 31 points for Elko.


Maurer praised the defensive effort of Sheldon Hutchins and Whip Thompson on Klekas.


"We were doing a heckuva job face guarding and whatever we could do," Maurer said.


Maurer also praised 6-7 Ian Hill. "He came in and neutralized some of their strength on the boards," Maurer said.


"I'm going to be very concerned about tomorrow," Maurer also said about today's game. "Our tank is not going to be full."


DAYTON 57, SPRING CREEK 51


The Dayton boys basketball team led throughout and led by as many as 14 points before holding on against Spring Creek. The Dust Devils made 8-of-8 foul shots in the last 2 1/2 minutes to secure the win, improving to 10-3 in Northern 3A play.


Dayton will try to stay ahead of Lowry in the standings when it plays at Winnemucca today. Jake Deen scored 17 points and Adam Diament came off the bench to added 13 points against Spring Creek.
