Bozeman, Ball, Wellock win state titles

3A WRESTLING


Dayton High's Mallory Bozeman, Fernley's Jonathan Ball and Yerington's Derek Wellock all won titles at the NIAA 3A State Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Winnemucca.


Bozeman beat Virgin Valley's Kyle Johnson 9-6 in the 125-pound finals. At 145, Ball pinned Lowry's Justin Grant in the finals. Ball won all three of his matches by pin. Dayton's Scott Redwine also placed fourth at 145.


At 171, Wellock defeated Dayton's Brian Irwin 9-2 in the finals. Other top Lyon County finishers included Yerington's Shawn McCarty, who placed second at 160. McCarty lost to Lowry's Cody Louk 8-0 in the finals. Corey Ryan also placed third at 160, beating Pahranagat Valley's Cody Beaman 8-2 in the third place match.


At heavyweight, Yerington's Lucas Mudloff placed second as he was pinned by Boulder City's James Farrelly in the finals. Also at heavyweight, Fernley's Lonnie Hatcher beat Dayton's Justin Seals 10-1 in the third-fourth place match.


At 140, Dayton's Stephen Novello pinnedd Yerington's Michael Dixon in the third-fourth place match.


Dayton placed fourth as a team with 76.5 points, finishing behind Spring Creek (109.5), Virgin Valley (125.5) and Lowry (160).
