Obituary: Sandra Wahrenbrock

Sandra Dealva Sorrells McCormick Wahrenbrock, 66, a Silver City resident since 1971, died June 21, 2003, at home.

A celebration of her legacy will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Silver City schoolhouse. It will include internment of her ashes in the Silver City Cemetery. A potluck dinner, music, dancing and reminiscing will be at the schoolhouse after internment.

Mrs. Wahrenbrock was born Jan. 17, 1937, to Russell and Myrtle Robbins Sorrells in Muskogee, Okla.

She attended the University of Iowa and graduated from the University of Tulsa, Okla., in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in acting, directing and radio/TV production. She moved to Reno in 1960 with her first husband, Jim McCormick. She worked at KOLO TV and the Reno Chamber of Commerce.

She was a member of the League of Women Voters, Zero Population Growth, Synanon Club, Planned Parenthood and the Unitarian Fellowship of Northern Nevada in Reno.

After moving to Silver City, she was a teacher's aid at Dayton Elementary School and a member of the Silver City Cemetery Board, town board, Volunteer Fire Department and Lyon County Democratic Central Committee. She was a counselor for Advocates to End Domestic Violence in Carson City and served on the Lyon County School Board.

For a number of years, she was a stringer, writing the Silver City column for the Mason Valley News.

Mrs. Wahrenbrock was the founder of the Earth, Fire and Water Bead Co. and copartner in the Sweetwater Trading Co., both in Silver City; and The Bead Store in Carson City.

She enjoyed singing, dancing, gardening, baking and traveling. Her interests in spiritual and business matters took her to Europe, Asia, Latin America and many locations throughout the United States.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Among her survivors are her husband, Larry Wahrenbrock of Silver City; son, Theo McCormick; daughter, Kristin McCormick; five grandchildren; sister, Donna Newcomb of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and three cousins.
