Jamie Engan posted a senior national championship qualifying time in the 1,000-yard freestyle to help lead another impressive effort by the Carson Tigersharks Swim Club on Saturday at the Far Western Championships in Morgan Hill, Calif.

Abby Niehoff and Kevin Dyer also had outstanding efforts for the Tigersharks. Engan won the 17-18 girls 1,000 free in 10 minutes, 0.56 seconds. Niehoff took second in the event for 13-14 girls in 10:29.44 while Tatum Boehnke was 10th in 10:55.46.

In 17-18 girls, Lauren Metcalf was fifth in 11:01.06 and in 15-16 girls Barbara Perkins was 14th in 10:57.38.

Niehoff also posted a personal best of 5:06.44 in qualifying third in the 500 free. Niehoff went on to lower her personal best 5:04.39 in taking third in the finals. Dyer was third in the 13-14 boys 500 free in 4:50.85.

Also for the Tigersharks, Hilary Schlager was 33rd in the 15-16 girls 100 breaststroke in 1:15.58 and Samantha Ashmore was 46th in the 13-15 girls in 1:06.32.

The meet concludes today and Carson has a chance to place in the top 15 as a team with only nine swimmers and no relays, "Which I think is pretty dad gum incredible," Tigershark coach Jim Puleo said.
