Dayton softball gains split against Lowry

The Dayton High softball team came back to win the nightcap to gain a split in a key Northern 3A doubleheader against Lowry on Saturday.

Lowry won the opener 9-4 while Dayton won the nightcap 11-8. The Dust Devils (10-6) moved into third in the Northern 3A at 8-4 while Lowry is in second behind Spring Creek at 7-2. Breanne DeHaven went 6-for-8 on the day to help lead Dayton.

Dayton scored four runs in the first inning and seven in the second to jump out to an 11-1 lead in the nightcap and held on. Melony Cox went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBI, DeHaven went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Melissa Goetz was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Sierra Barnwell had a hit and a run, Caty Cross had a hit, two runs and an RBI, Brittany Hill had a hit and two runs, Amanda Beard had a hit and Jessica Greer added a hit, RBI and a run. Greer was the winning pitching, allowing five runs over 5.1 innings.

In the opener, DeHaven was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run, Brittany Hill had two hits, a double and two runs, Cox had a hit and an RBI and Goetz and Sara Simmons each added a hit. Simmons struck out three over the last two innings in relief.
