A funeral service for Thomas Abele Hitz, 68, a four-year Dayton resident, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Walton's.

Mr. Hitz died April 30, 2006, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno as a result of injuries sustained while building his house. He was born April 11, 1938, in Michigan City, Ind., to Carl and Ruth Hitz.

He married Mary Ann Hitz on July 6, 1985, in Milford, Mich.

Before moving to Dayton, he lived in Detroit.

He worked at Ford Motor Co. for 32 years as a design engineer in the instrumentation group for the passenger-car division. He retired in 1997.

He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 12 years.

He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering.

He enjoyed golfing, skiing, racquetball, volleyball and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carol Ann Bergenson.

Among his survivors are his wife of Dayton; son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Donna Hitz of Fenton, Mich.; son Jeffrey Hitz of Breckenridge, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law, Holly and John Thomas of Canton, Mich.; and two granddaughters.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
