Carson wrestling beats North Valleys

The Carson High wrestling team was coming off a strong showing at the Las Vegas Classic and continued to be solid in a 55-12 win over North Valleys on Wednesday at Morse Burley Gym.

"It looks a little better," Carson coach Tyson Thivierge said. "I'm not going to say that's not stuff we can improve on. We need to take it to people. But for the most part we wrestled pretty well."

Nick Schlager (103 pounds), Adam Welch (125), Robbie Bozin (130), Aaron Jolcover (145) and Max Schadek (heavyweight) all won by pin for the Senators. Martin Azzam also won 13-15 at 160.

Ricky Ugarte (112), Owen Craugh (119), Kyle Banko (135) and Matt Heath (189) all won by forfeit. There was a double forfeit at 171.

Among the wrestlers Thivierge said he was pleased with was first-time competitor Welch. "He wrestled probably the most solid," Thivierge said.

Even tough he lost 16-15 at 152, Thivierge said he was also pleased with Valaderez, another first-time wrestler.

"He showed a lot of heart," Thivierge said. "He's one of the kids that constantly fights."

Next up for Carson will be Reno's Sierra Nevada Classic to be held next Wednesday and Thursday. The event features top wrestlers from across the Western United States.

Two of Carson's top wrestlers did compete on Wednesday, Travis Lamborn at 160 and Todd Banko at 119.

Lamborn continues to nurse an abdominal strain and Banko was out with an elbow injury suffered at Las Vegas. Lamborn will be back for the Sierra Nevada Classic while Banko should return within a couple of weeks.

"I'm happy to hear that we're going to get both of them back in a short period of time," Thivierge said.

Carson received some more good news as it's expected that 215-pounder Trent Simpson should return in time for the Northern 4A Championships. Simpson's broken thumb, which has four pins, is expected to heal by then.
