More than a dozen Carson City commuters found themselves entangled in fender benders Thursday morning thanks to a sheet of ice and snow covering the capital city's roads.
Lt. Ken Sandage said between 5:15 a.m. and 9:32 a.m., 12 accidents were reported.
"Ninety percent are attributed to speeds too fast for conditions," he said.
Vehicles collided with other vehicles or roadside obstacles at Edmonds Drive and Damon Road, Fairview Drive and Saliman Road, Arrowhead Drive and Ryan Way, Marian and Beverly drives, South Carson Street, Roop Street and Fairview Drive, Winnie Lane and Orsmby Boulevard, Roop and Fifth streets, Fairview Drive and Carson Street, and three accidents within 15 minutes at Fairview Drive and Saliman Road. A single-vehicle rollover was also reported at Arrowhead Drive and Goni Road and a school bus was involved in an accident at North Carson and Washington streets in which a 6-year-old boy reported he'd hit his head.
"Road department sanders just could not keep up with the requests," Sandage said. "People have to slow down when there's inclement weather. They have to allow for extra time to commute."
Today's weather is expected to be partly cloudy with a high of 39 to 49 degrees and light winds. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with lows in the teens and 20s.
Saturday will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of snow near the valley floor.
