ATA academy wins numerous awards

Members of the recently opened Carson City ATA Black Belt Academy recently competed in Sacramento in taekwondo and took home numerous awards.

Under the direction of co-owners Shawn and Katherine Goodner, the academy took home close to 30 top four finishes and nine first place awards. Finishes for those who competed were:

Jared Brown, 13: sparring, first; forms, first; weapons, second. Morgen Brown, 12: sparring, first; forms, second. Blaine Soukup, 8, weapons, third. Alaina Pratt, 11, weapons, second. Bebop Martinez, 7: sparring, second; weapons, first; forms, second. Joey Cusumano, 10: weapons, first; forms, first.

Nick Goodner, 7: sparring, first; weapons, third; forms, third. Elijah Fajayan, 8: sparring, second; weapons, first, forms, first. Jacob Bertocchi, 9: weapons, second; forms, second; sparring, second. Beau Stevens, 14: weapons, second; forms, third. Emily Eyswert, 9: weapons, third. Kaira Stevens, 11, forms, fourth.

Shawn Goodner, a first-degree black belt, 36, also took first in weapons and second in sparring and forms.

Soccer skills camps are set to be offered

Head North Sports of Truckee will be offering full- and half-day Soccer Skills Camps and Soccer Conditioning Camps for youth soccer players throughout the summer at various locations in the Reno-Tahoe-Truckee-Carson Valley area.

Half-day camps will meet from 9 a.m to noon and full-day camps hold training from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The Soccer Skills Camps will be led by Jeff Cade and his Olympic Development Program staff and coaches. Cade is the director of ODP for 12 and under through 19 and under for Nevada and the Director of Coaching for Nevada Soccer.

Dates and locations for the Soccer Skills Camps are: July 31 to Aug. 4 in Truckee; Aug. 7 to 11 in Carson/Gardnerville; August 14 to 18 in Reno.

The Soccer Conditioning/Strength/Speed Camps are slated for July 24 to 28 in Incline Village

The Head Trainer for the conditioning/strength camps is Paul Heffern, who is a personal trainer at the Incline Athletic Club and holds an International Sports Science Association certification. His athletic achievements include being a six-time Nevada State Powerlifting Champion, competing in eight World Powerlifting Championships, and being football most valuable player at Ball State University.
