Shroys sweep in cross country

Brothers Chad and Richard Shroy ran 1-2 in the boys race while Yvonne Hollett turned in a solid second-place performance in the girls race to provide highlights for Carson High during a four-way Northern 4A cross country meet on Wednesday at Spanish Springs.

Chad Shroy, a senior, won the boys race with a time of 17 minutes, 9 seconds on the double loop 3.1-mile course. Richard Shroy, a freshman, finished second in 18:17, freshman Nick Schlager took fourth in 19:06, Ethan Graber sixth in 19:16 and Zack Mapes seventh in 19:25 to round out the team scoring.

Carson's boys won each of their three dual meets - 20-39 over Douglas, 18-45 over Spanish Springs and 15-50 over Reed.

David Williams was the top finisher for Douglas with a fifth-place effort of 19:12. Douglas defeated Spanish Springs 18-45 and defeated Reed 15-50.

Hollett, yet another freshman, surged from fifth-place in the final 400 meters to finish second behind Whitney Lindsey of Douglas in the girls race. Whitney won with a 21:01 clocking, while Hollett ran 21:17 to edge Taylor Biaggi of Douglas by one second.

The next four Carson runners finished 40 seconds apart, as Christy Works took fifth in 22:12, Gloria Sosa sixth in 22:43, Yvette Hollett seventh in 22:52 and Kristin Dockery eighth in 22:52.

The close-knit pack paid off as Carson's girls edged Douglas for the team victory, 24-35. The Senators also outran Spanish Springs 19-42 and Reed 20-41.

Skylar Young also cracked the top 10 for Douglas, as she finished 10th in 23:09. The Douglas team defeated Reed and Spanish Springs by identical 20-41 scores.

The Northern 4A J.V. finals will be held Friday at Spanish Springs and the varsity runners will compete at the Northern 4A Regionals Championships will be held next Thursday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.
