The Disabled American Veterans' "Vans for Vets" program needs funds. A poker run will be held Saturday for the program, hosted by the DAV Carson City Chapter No. 7.

Motorcycle and car enthusiasts are welcome. Registration is 9-11 a.m. at the Carson City Harley-Davidson dealer at 2749 N. Carson St.

"The Disabled American Vets transport vets from Douglas County, Carson City and outlying areas to the VA hospital in Reno," said retired sergeant major Walter Willson, the run's committee chairman.

He spent 43 years as a member of the Nevada National Guard in family support and seven years as a volunteer.

"This fundraiser is to help supplement the purchase of vans. We have seven vans in Northern Nevada and put hundreds of thousands of miles on those things."

From Harley-Davidson, the poker run goes to Genoa; the old Cutthroat Saloon in Markleeville, Calif.; the Carson Valley Inn parking lot in Minden; Dick's in Mound House, then returns to Harley-Davidson. It is about 60 miles round trip.

"We invite people to cruise along, take their time - it's a regular poker run," Willson said.

Entry fee is $10 per vehicle and includes an after-run barbecue. Extra hands may be purchased for $5. Grand prize for the best poker hand is a $250 U.S. savings bond. There will also be raffle drawings.

"A lot of casinos have given us buffet tickets as prizes. Tickets will be available at registration; cost is six for $5. It's not a big run, but we would like to make $1,000," Willson said. "We had just one rider our first year and about 40 last year. There will also be a 50/50 drawing."
