Nicholas 'Nick' Richard Boyd

A funeral service for Nicholas "Nick" Richard Boyd, 24, of West Burlington, Iowa, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, 2102 S. Main St., Burlington. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, and the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.

Mr. Boyd died Sept. 23, 2006, as the result of an ATV accident in West Burlington.

He was born Nov. 17, 1981, in Ogallala, Neb., to Merlin Richard and Barbara D. Shaffer Boyd.

He graduated from Tonopah High School in 2000.

He belonged to the military police of the Nevada National Guard. He had been deployed to Iraq from February to December 2003. He was also deployed to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He received several commendations.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing poker, restoring his 1992 Jeep Wrangler, the L.A. Lakers and the San Francisco 49ers. He belonged to the RMF Motorcycle Club.

He was preceded in death by his brother Jordan Daniel Boyd on March 14, 2006, and grandparents Claud W. Shaffer and Meda D. Shea.

Among his survivors are his mother and stepfather Dave Kaminski of West Burlington; father and stepmother Pam Boyd of Fort Madison, Iowa; fiancee Erica Willis of West Burlington; brothers Dustin, Travis, Robert and Joseph; sisters Tianna, Alexis and Susan; and several extended-family members.

Burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison.
