Car off Highway 28 near Sand Harbor

A vehicle traveling northbound in Highway 28 early today crossed the center line and dove 400 feet off the cliff on the side of the road near Sand Harbor State Park.

The car hit boulders on the way down and the car landed with its nose in Lake Tahoe.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle for a couple of hours before a fisherman on Lake Tahoe spotted the vehicle and called the report in at 9 a.m.

The male driver was rescued and was found to be conscious. He was taken by Care Flight at 10:12 a.m. to Renown Medical Center. There were no passengers.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District personnel and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office marine patrol were dispatched to the scene, as well as the Nevada Highway Patrol and the Nevada Division of Forestry.

The NHP reports possible delays on Highway 28 near the accident.
