Fallon routs Dust Devil girls

Superior speed and inside strength by Fallon was too much for the Dayton girls basketball team to handle on Tuesday night.

Led by16 points from Alex Faught and 12 each by Sara Parsons and Kelsey Hiatt, the Greenwave outran and outmuscled the Dust Devils, 63-34 at Elmo Dericco Gym.

Fallon improved to 3-1 on the season while Dayton fell to 1-2.

Scoring often on fast breaks and inside shots, Fallon dominated the final three quarters of the contest. The Lady Wave built an early 8-2 lead on two baskets by Kenyah Brown and one each from Faught and Hiatt. Dayton came back behind three baskets by Mactia Spencer to tie the score at 10-10 with 1:17 to play in the opening period. Brown scored on a putback to give Fallon a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Dayton took its only lead of the game early in the second quarter when Ariella Ruybal hit the first of her four 3-pointers to make the score 13-12.

Hiatt responded with a 10-foot jumper that ignited a 14-3 Fallon run from which the Dust Devils never recovered. A jump shot and three free throws by Parsons along with two baskets by Lauren Whitaker that came off of steals " one by her and one by Faught " keyed the Greenwave run that put Fallon up by 10 at 26-16. Baskets by Aundria Pluck and Erika Garcia cut Fallon's lead to 26-20 at halftime.

Any hope Dayton might have had at a comeback was squelched early in the third quarter. Fallon opened the second half with an 8-0 run that erased any doubt about who would win. Two baskets by Kenyah Brown, one by Khaliah Brown and a Parsons layup put Fallon up 34-20 and left the Devils in the dust. The Lady Wave's lead steadily increased from there, reaching a high of 30 points at 61-31 with 44 seconds to go in the game.

Fallon scored many points off transition and steals and many more on inside shots. The Wave dominated the boards, scoring a lot of points on second, third or even fourth chances.

Dayton coach Shari Andreasen wasn't upset in spite of the blowout loss.

"I was okay with it," Andreasen said. "It's preseason, we saw some adjustments we need to make. Boxing out would be one of them because they got almost all their shots inside, and we'll be working on our transition game.

"Fallon ran great, they played great and they played consistent. But it was a good game for us. I don't think the score reflected the way our girls played."

Rubyal led the Dust Devils with 16 points while Pluck and Spencer each added eight points. Kenya Brown added 10 for Fallon.

Both teams play in tournaments beginning on Thursday. Fallon is in the Spanish Springs Tournament while Dayton goes up the hill for the Virginia City Tournament.
