Deputy: Woman claims truck hit, her, witnesses say no

An incident at Roop and Adam streets between a pedestrian and a vehicle is being investigated after the alleged victim reported she was hit by the truck, but witnesses stated they saw the woman fall down.

Betty Sharks, 64, was taken by ambulance to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center at 3:22 p.m.

Her daughter-in-law Ladonna Miller said Sharks had just left their apartment to cross Roop Street at Adams Street to meet her grandchildren's school bus like she does every day.

Then, said Miller, she heard screaming. When she went outside, her mother-in-law, whom she said recently underwent back surgery, was lying in the center turn lane.

"She said the truck hit her," said Miller.

Sharks winced in pain when firefighters rolled her onto a backboard to put her into the ambulance.

However, Deputy Sal Acosta said, witnesses told him the truck didn't hit the woman, but that she just fell down when she was next to it as she stood in the center lane.

Acosta said the truck, driven by Kashmir Sodhi, had no evidence of contact with anything.

"Look, it's covered in dirt. If something rubbed against it, you would see that," said Acosta pointing to the Dodge Dakota that was covered from bumper to bumper with a film of dirt common to cars after a snowstorm from the road sanding. "There is no evidence of rub on this car."

Sodhi said he didn't believe he'd hit the woman, but that he did see her fall in his rearview mirror and he pulled over to get her out of the street.

"I stopped to help her up," Sodhi said. "Then she said I hit her."

Miller said she doesn't believe her mother-in-law would lie about being struck.

"She's not gonna fake that," Miller said. "She's hurt."
